Horses For Heroes is a New Mexico-based non-profit dedicated to supporting post-9/11 Veterans and active military members. They offer unique horsemanship, wellness, and Skill-set Restructuring™ experiences at no cost.
Designed for those who have bravely served our country and may be dealing with PTSD, physical injuries, or combat trauma, Horses for Heroes provides hands-on interaction with horses and immersion in ranch life in the high desert. The camaraderie with fellow Veterans and active military members is as crucial as the experiences themselves.
Horses For Heroes believes in sharing experiences and hopes to provide Veterans and active military members with a new and vital mission. Their programs offer a space for recuperation, recreation, and reintegration into their communities. We view Horsemanship as Leadership, assisting our Heroes on a journey that integrates mind, body, and spirit. Run by Veterans and qualified volunteers, 100% of contributions directly support their completely free programs, ensuring our Heroes find solace and strength through the way of the horse.
HorsePower is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of at-risk youth since 2001. Based in Missouri, HorsePower offers the longest-running therapeutic mental health equine program in the Kansas City area.
What makes HorsePower truly unique is its commitment to addressing a range of emotional issues, including PTSD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, ADD, ADHD, and Mood Disorder. The program's effectiveness lies in the power of therapeutic horsemanship, where youth focus on something beyond themselves—the horse.
Students engage in the HorsePower program to develop essential life-coping skills that extend to their homes, schools, and communities. The non-threatening ranch environment, coupled with the majestic presence of horses, aids students in gaining self-confidence, self-worth, and basic life skills that may have been diminished in their lives. The program's impact is further extended as therapists and parents receive notes and observations from the dedicated instructors, assisting in the continued growth and healing of the students upon their return to the treatment center or home.
"I’m so proud of myself. I’m having fun and loving life. I’m learning!!! You helped get me here. I had to do the work, however, you taught me the skills to get where I am today, and I know if I fail, I can stand back up, lift my head and turn it into a lesson. Thank you sooooooo much! You truly have no idea how thankful I am for you and the program you and Rick have built."
- James, US Army Vet
"I recommend this as a wonderful place to volunteer, to give of your resources and receive the blessing of being a part of helping make a difference in the lives of the children God sends to participate in the program."
- Jaime Villines, HorsePower Volunteer
